Cavernous Malformation

Cavernous malformation, also known as cavernoma, is a low flow, low pressure type of AVM which may be congenital or acquired. This type of AVM is comprised of thin walled vessels that form lakes or sinusoids. A cavernoma causes symptoms by bleeding and damaging brain tissue or by irritating brain tissue and causing seizures. The bleeding is seldom life threatening but may be disabling.

Diagnosis

An MRI is used to diagnose cavernoma.

Treatment

Cavernoma may be treated by surgical resection if the lesion can be approached safely. "No treatment" may occassionally be the best option for patients. Radiosurgery and embolization are not effective treatments for cavernous malformation.
